Fisher’s Buildings, Balliol College

Fisher’s Buildings

The Fisher Buildings at the far western corner of Balliol were built in 1867 by Henry Keene.

They are Grade II listed (List Entry No. 1369623).

Jackson's Oxford Journal of 13 October 1866 stated that there would be “a finer front, a higher and more elaborate tower, and oriel windows less confined thatn those existing. The architect is Mr. Waterhouse, of London, and the cost has been estimated at 20,000l.; but in carrying out so great a work the Society will be materially aided by the munificent bequest of a lady benefactor.”

Pevsner says of the Fisher Buildings, “It is quite a handsome composition, though a little dull.”

The Fisher Buildings were refaced by Alfred Waterhouse in 1877.
