Oxford History: The High

Longwall Street

Longwall Street

Longwall Street separates 60 High Street and Magdalen College: the college’s fifteenth-century wall, with the deer-park behind, runs along much of the east side of the street.

The wall it is named after, however, is the old city wall, which runs parallel to it on the west side but which is now concealed within the grounds of New College.

Longwall Street splits into Holywell Street and St Cross Road. It has become an important through-route since the High was closed to traffic in 2000.
