Oxford History: Mayors & Lord Mayors

Thomas de Sowy

Mayor of Oxford, 1294/5, 1301/2, 1302/3, and 1303/4

Thomas de Sowy (or de Sowey / Sewey / Sewy) may well have been a member of the Sewey family who gave their name to Sewys Lane (now corrupted to Shoe Lane).

Sowy was elected Praepostus (Bailiff) on the Council in 1281, 1282, 1284, 1285, 1288, 1289, and 1292.

Sowy was elected Mayor in 1294, 1301, 1302, and 1303. It appears that he may have died during his final mayoral year.
