Laurence Wyth

Mayor of Oxford 1241/2

Laurence Wyth (or With / Wythe / Wido / Gwyth / Gwydo / Wydo / Wiard / Wy / de Wight / de Withe) is variously recorded by Anthony Wood as “filius Wydonis” (son of Wydo or Guy) and “filius Wiardi” (son of Wiardus).

The surname probably settled down in his lifetime and appears to have been adopted by his wife: a Juliana Wyth, widow of Laurence Wyth, appears in the records in 1282.

Wyth was Bailiff of Oxford in 1234, and elected Mayor in 1241.
