Mayors of Oxford
1836–1962
The Municipal Corporations Act came into force on 1 January
1836.
A new council was formed that day and a new Mayor
elected to complete the council year which now ran to 31 October.
From 1836 to 1948 the Mayor's term of office began on 1 November.
From 1949, elections were held in May and the Mayor chosen immediately
afterwards.
A woman was elected Mayor of Oxford for the first time in 1933.
