Oxford History: Mayors & Lord Mayors

Mayors of Oxford

The Municipal Corporations Act came into force on 1 January 1836.

A new council was formed that day and a new Mayor elected to complete the council year,
which henceforth (1836–1948) began in November.

Since 1949, elections have been held in May and Mayors have been elected immediately afterwards.

A woman was elected Mayor of Oxford for the 1st time in 1933.
