Oxford Ghost Signs: Ransomes lawnmowers, 29 Old High Street

Ransome sign

History of The Lion lawnmower

This sign, which probably dates from the early twentieth century, can be seen just under the chimney on the gable end of the house called Pomona (29 Old High Street, below).

29 Old High Street

There was a nursery attached to this house from at least the early nineteenth century, occupied first by the North family and then by the Wests. In 1911 William George West (79) was living here with his niece Lizzie West acting as his housekeeper. He died near the end of 1912 at the age of 80, and from 1912 Field & Jacobs were the market gardeners and nurserymen here: either party could have been an agent for Ransome's lawnmowers.
