Oxford Ghost Signs: Axtell's at 22 Regent Street

The engraved words running along between the lower and upper floors of 22 Regent Street reads:

Memorials Stone Marble and Granite

Although W. H. Axtell, monumental masons, were at 22 Regent Street from the nineteenth century to the 1970s, this is in fact a fake ghost sign, as the former single-story corner building was demolished in 2016. It can be seen here in 2012, bearing the same words that appear on the present house:

The advertisement below appeared in Kelly’s Directory for 1940. It shows the grave marker in the cemetery at the east end of Christ Church Cathedral of William Ince (1825–1910), who was Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford from 1878 until his death.
