This milestone was photographed by Henry Minn in 1913 when it was more legible and not sunk in tarmac (see his North Oxford album, Bodleian Library MS. Top. Oxon. d.501). In his photograph, the estate agent's sign to the right of this stone advertises a pair of houses being erected on the site behind, and Minn's caption reads:
The first milestone on the west side of the Woodstock Road, it stood on the edge of the raised footpath, a ditch separating the path from the fence. When the houses were built the boundary wall was brought forward to the line of the path & the stone incorporated in the garden wall of No. [left blank: now 243] Woodstock Rd. Feb. 16.1913.
