St Peter-in-the East Church: Henry Edward MILLER (1899–1918)

Henry Edward Miller was born at the Lodge, Holywell Cemetery on 2 July 1899. He was the son of the gardener William Margetts Miller (born in Hook Norton in 1858/9 and baptised there on 2 January) and Elizabeth Sturges (born in ??CardeWoodstock in c.1858).

Henry's father was brought up in Oxford, and his parents were married on 12 April 1884 at St Paul's Church [details] and had the following children:

  • Alice Miller (born in Woodstock in 1885, reg. second quarter)
  • Ann Elizabeth Miller (born at 3 Grove Street, Summertown on 31 May 1888 and baptised at St Paul's Church, Walton Street on 22 July); died at Plantation Road, Oxford at the age of three in 1892 and buried on 10 February (probably in St Sepulchre's Cemetery, as the burial is recorded in registers of Ss Philip & James and St Giles's Churches)
  • William Margetts Miller (born at the Police Station in Woodstock on 27 June 1886 and baptised at St Paul's Church, Oxford on 19 September)
  • Arthur Sturges Miller (born at 38 Plantation Road, Oxford on 4 May 1891 and baptised at Ss Philip & James's Church on 28 May)
  • Richard Percival Miller (born in Oxford in 1895, reg. Headington district second quarter)
  • James Miller (born at the Lodge, Holywell Cemetery on 18 July 1897 at baptised at St Cross Church on 19 September)
  • Henry Edward Miller (born at the Lodge, Holywell Cemetery on 2 July 1899 and baptised at St Cross Church on 27 August).

Henry's parents began their married life in Woodstock, where William was a police constable, but by 1888 they were living Summertown, and he was working as a gardener. By the time of the 1891 census they were living in Plantation Road in Oxford, in the parish of Ss Philip & James.

By mid-1897 Henry's father had been appointed gardener/caretaker at Holywell Cemetery, and the family moved into the lodge.

At the time of the 1901 census Henry (1), listed as Harry, was living at the Lodge, Holywell Cemetery with his parents William and Elizabeth (both aged 42) and his five surviving older siblings. Alice (16) was a dressmaker, William (14) was an assistant gardener, and Arthur (9), Richard (6), and James (3) were probably at school.

Henry's father William Margetts Miller died at the age of 57 at the lodge of Holywell Cemetery, where he was still caretaker. on 29 April 1916 and was buried at Holywell Cemetery on 4 May. His effects came to £139 3s. 6d., and his wife was his executor.

Poppy In the First World War Henry Edward Miller served as a Private in the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), attached to the 1st/20th Battalion of the London Regiment (Service No. G/29136). He died at the age of 19 on 25 August 1918.

He has no known grave, but is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 7) and .....................................
