47 Men of North Oxford
47 Men of North Oxford 1914–1918
Liz Wade (Graffiti Press)
This is a book about the 47 men commemorated on the War Memorial in St Margaret’s Parish, North Oxford, and on this website.
All these men had a connection with this small district of North Oxford, although they were to die as far apart as Flanders and Iraq. Liz Wade has set their lives and deaths in the context of the wider history of the First World War.
The book is not planned as a commercial project – the aim is to raise awareness of our local area’s contribution to the Great War. Our 47 men are in many ways a microcosm of all those who gave their lives.
All profits from the sale will go to Combat Stress, which provides help to armed services’ veterans who have mental health problems. The charity has agreed to its logo being on the cover of the book.
The Oxford Mail ran an article about the book on 8 October (“New book on heroes’ stories is inspired by war memorial”), and it went on sale on 8 November 2013.
The book is in A5 format and, including photographs, is 96 pages. The cost is £6.00, plus postage and packing where necessary. Local deliveries are free.
Copies can be ordered directly from Liz Wade on 01865 556031 / 07984 602723, and are also available from Blackwell's or the Town Hall shop
