This First World War memorial came from the Methodist Chapel in Walton Street, which used to stand about halfway between Adelaide Street and St Bernard's Road (between Nos. 94 and 96). It was opened in 1883, and the following report appeared in Jackson's Oxford Journal on 13 October that year:
The new Wesleyan Chapel, Walton-street, was opened a short time since. It is Gothic of the early English period, and it is faced entirely with red brick. The interior is also finished in red brick work with stamp plaster. It is 60 feet by 38 feet, and 48 feet in height, and is calculated to seat 450 persons. There is a school-room at the back of a spacious character, in which are four class rooms, and accommodation for tea meetings. The building has cost about 3000l., and it is proposed to erect a handsome boundary wall. Mr. Mullett Ellis, of 8, Old Jewry, London, is the architect. The building has been erected by Messrs. Wilkins and Sons, of Eynsham and Oxford.
The chapel closed in 1946 and was demolished in 1966. Kingston Court now stands on its site.
Its war memorial was transferred to the wall of the Wesley Memorial Church in New Inn Hall Street, and its records (including original baptismal and marriage registers) are held at the Oxfordshire History Centre (NM5/26). Photographs are also available there: details here, but no online thumbnails: POX0044765 / POX0122427 / POX0122428 / POX0122430
