The parishes of Broad Street

Parish churches covering Broad Street

Broad Street was divided between the parishes of four churches until 1966:

  • South side: St Michael-at the Northgate parish
  • East side (starting where Catte Street joined the old city wall at New College Lane):
    St Peter-in-the-East and Holywell parishes
  • North side: St Mary Magdalen parish

Thus the street is dealt with in four different census books. The street numbering in Broad Street has not changed since the 1830s, and the buildings in each parish are as follows:

Today there are just two parishes covering the street.

Ward of Broad Street

The four ancient wards of the city met at Carfax, hence the whole of Broad Street (south, east, and north) was in the North-East Ward.
