Oxford mounting stones: Old Road, Wheatley

This stone stands near the bottom of Old Road on the Wheatley side, near the junction with Keydale Road (see photograph below).
Passengers in carriages for London
had to dismount and walk up the hill at both the Wheatley and Headington sides of Shotover Hill, and people on horseback would probably have done likewise.
This stone has a triangulation benchmark, presumably made when Britain was retriangulated between 1936 and 1953 rather than in the original 1783-1853 triangulation.
