Barton Village Road, Headington: Number changes

Note that there is no separate listing for Barton Village Road prior to Kelly's Directory for 1940. Up to the 1938 directory, the houses are listed the end of the west and east side of Barton Road respectively and described as “The Village”.

West side (odd numbers)

The old numbers ran from 1 to 25 The Village, Barton Road.
When Barton Village Road was given a separate name, Nos. 11–25 kept the same numbers, but there was some very trivial renumbering of the old houses at the top in about 1950, as shown below.

Blenheim Nurseries Blenheim Nurseries*

* The Blenheim Nurseries were run by Arthur and Jack Jacobs. Their brick house, which stood on the first bend when going downhill, had to be pulled down in order for buses to get through. Jack Jacobs moved across the road to the White House, which was built for him by Harold Jacobs of the Grey House.

East side (even numbers)

The east side of Barton Village Road had more drastic number changes because of the new council houses which started to be built here at the end of the 1930s. In about 1942 the council houses were all given numbers from one hundred upwards, in anticipation of what was to come, but in 1949 they were renumbered again starting with a more logical 58.

Today

These numbers are the same today, although some of the houses have been rebuilt.

There are more houses in Barton Village Road now:

  • West side, odd numbers: These increased after 1949 as the houses crept down the road, culminating in Nos. 85–97, which are part of Barton Park and go down as far as Barton Fields Road.
  • East side, even numbers: The houses had already reached the bottom of the road in 1949, but now the part of the road around the corner running alongside the Bayswater Brook has also been developed (Nos. 110–158).
