Oxford Milestones: London–Henley–Oxford turnpike

Milestone outside 37 Rose Hill

This road from London to Oxford via Henley was turnpiked in 1736 (Act 9 George II Chap 14). It was an important route before the London Road was built in the late eighteenth century.

Since this road reached its destination in Oxford, there is only one milestone in the suburbs, outside 37 Rose Hill. It was then only a mile or so to the toll gate at the end of St Clement’s Road, where travellers would be at their destination.
