Henry Lasher (d.1752)
Henry Lasher was matriculated at the University of Oxford as an apothecary (“Pharmacopol.”) on 13 December 1698. He was the cousin of Joshua Lasher, Regius Professor of Medicine from 1718 to 1729.
On 8 August 1702 at Bampton, Oxfordshire, Henry Lasher married Elizabeth Trollop. They had one child:
- Joshua Lasher junior (born on 2 August 1706 and baptised at St Mary-the-Virgin Church in Oxford on 21 August)
Henry’s wife Elizabeth Lasher died before her baby Joshua was one year old, and was described as being “of St Mary’s” when she was buried at St Peter-in-the-East Church on 8 July 1707.
Baby Joshua Lasher only lived to the age of two-and-a-half, and was buried inside the church of St Peter-in-the-East on 2 April 1710: he was described as the son of Henry Lasher, apothecary of St Mary’s.
A Joseph Lasher was buried at St Mary-the-Virgin Church on 3 September 1726. The diamond stone in the floor of the church (right) states that he died on 1 September 1726, aged 23. It reads:
IO. LASHER OB. 1.SEP.1726 AET.23
Joseph Lasher would have been born in about 1703, and it is possible that he was a relation of Henry, perhaps even his son.
His cousin Joshua Lasher left his house to his wife for her lifetime, but when she died in 1743 it passed to Henry.
Henry Lasher died in Oxford in 1752 and was buried at St Aldate's Church on 17 September.
The “Will of Henry Lasher, Apothecary of Oxford” (date of probate 14 November 1752) was deposited at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury: ref. PROB 11/798. He gave his house in Holywell where he was living at the time of his death to his brother-in-law Thomas Trollop, and a house in Pennyfarthing Street and other items to his niece Anne Enyon.
